Common Housefly

No one needs to tell us that flies can be very aggravating, especially when dining. But they are also known to spread disease. Holding an outdoor picnic or having friends over for dinner inside the home? Don’t be embarrassed by pesky flies.

There are the 7 ways, that you can try. Hopefully one of these will appeal to you and you can start ridding the area of flies.

1 – White Vinegar/Cinnamon Spray.

  • Spray Bottle
  • White Vinegar (fill the bottle but leave some room)
  • Cinnamon (one stick or
  • 10 Drops Detergent

Clean all surfaces inside the kitchen and other areas known for flies. Shake and spray this mixture on all surfaces. If there are flies in the home, they will start to drop immediately! You can use this spray anytime you clean to keep flies at bay.

Although this works inside the home, I’ve used it on tabletops outside before setting the table, allowing it to dry first. But there are other deterrents to use outside and will talk about those as well as for inside.

2 – Hang Bags with Vodka

  • Vodka (you may have some around the house but do not put the good stuff out for the flies.
  • Quart Bags

This is my favorite method of keeping the flies away. They detest the smell of vodka! Depending on the size of the area you are placing the Vodka bags. I use 1 bag and ½ cup of Vodka per 8×10 foot area. This is perfect for the kitchen and dining area. Poke a hole close to the top of the quart bag and pour ½ cup of Vodka into the bag. Hang it by the hole anywhere near where you keep food and could attract flies. When dining, I’m sure there are fancier ways to deter these ugly flies that could chase your guests right out the front door. Perhaps use Vodka in a small glass bowl and place a sprig of lemon grass, rosemary, lavender, in it so no one drinks it and it would make an interesting center piece adornment! The sprig may even assist the vodka in keeping the flies away!
